Don't want it

Is it just me, or are weddings out of control?

I'm watching a news story on couples who choreograph dances for their first dance. This stuff is all over YouTube, and it's really fun to watch (I'm sure it would be MORE fun in person), but I can't help but think that eventually this is going to become a thing. That you do. A competition. We have to have a cool dance! We have to have a cooler dance than everyone else! Another thing for brides to agonize over.

According to the girls at work, Save the Date cards are de riguer now. (I personally think whatever, they'll make it or they won't. Everyone I care about will know the date well in advance WITHOUT a card.) It's even more impressive if you make a creative Save the Date. One girl who is getting married at a destination wedding in Mexico made little messages in a bottle with sand and shells for her Save the Date. She had to put all the corks in, then soak them in water so they'd stay tight. She soaked them in coconut-scented water!

From there you've got the invitations. And apparently at the rehearsal dinner you should give both sets of parents a sentimental gift (embroidered hankerchief, something about how much you love their child, etc.) So not only do you have to find something for the entire wedding party, but you also have to find the perfect thing for parents.

At work I tried to argue against these things. Or rather against the obligation of these things. But they're so fine and good. Save the Dates--you need them! Fun dances--kick the party off right! Sentimental gifts for parents--of course! After all they've done for you! But it all just turns into one more obligation, one more source of stress, one more thing you have to plan for (and pay for).

Sigh. I never wanted to elope, and I'm not planning a wedding any time soon, but good grief.

About Me

  • I'm thirty & living in Amish Country, PA. I'm a marketing writer for a non-profit.
  • I'm Mennonite, but not in a head-covered, dress-wearing kind of way. More in a hippy-liberal, peace-loving kind of way.
  • I like books, discussing, thinking, my church, friends, and my family.
  • I'm good at gift-giving, shopping, and writing.
  • I'm bad at meeting new people, cleaning my car, and keeping my house warm.
  • I'm annoyed by people who wear shorts in the winter, create excessive drama, don't recycle, or talk about how fat they are.
