Shut up and deal

Things that have been irritating me lately:

The lack of a singular, gender neutral pronoun in the English language. I'm trying to write something conversational AND use proper grammar, and the constant "he or she" thing makes it very hard. Someone get on this, okay? Get me this pronoun ASAP.

My car. Perhaps it senses that I'm going to be ditching it soon, but it has decided that when I turn it off, and the power-locks pop up automatically, that it will make the worst possible buzzing noise. It sounds like a smoke detector for second, and then it does it again. Two short, horrible buzzes. I think the locks may be on the verge of failing, and the car will trap me inside.

Somehow I got roped into doing some scheduling for this church thing--and by "roped in," I mean I said that I would do it. Which is my own fault. And actually, I do have time to do it. I said yes because I know how tough it is to find people, that I was kind of a last resort. I know what it's like to have to fill a spot, and to finally have someone say yes. It's like a weight lifted. But--I get so irritated by the fact that you have to ask so many people before you get a yes. Someone has to do this--it doesn't require skill, it doesn't require a gift, it just requires willingness and a minor time commitment. So suck it up and deal. SOMEONE has to do it. Unless you don't think the church should do anything, and in that case why don't we all just go home and forget even showing up on Sunday morning. Good grief, people. It's nice that you feel you have the freedom to say no, but that doesn't mean that this stuff is going to automatically get done. Suck it up, do your jobs, and be part of the community.

I could rave on about that a bit further, but I'll stop. I'm just sick of trying to recruit, and I'm sick of always being the one to say yes. What do people think is going to happen f they always say "no"--there aren't that many of us. The same people will end up doing everything, or it just won't get done. And if I hear anyone complaining about that . . . *raises and shakes fist threateningly,* watch out.

About Me

  • I'm thirty & living in Amish Country, PA. I'm a marketing writer for a non-profit.
  • I'm Mennonite, but not in a head-covered, dress-wearing kind of way. More in a hippy-liberal, peace-loving kind of way.
  • I like books, discussing, thinking, my church, friends, and my family.
  • I'm good at gift-giving, shopping, and writing.
  • I'm bad at meeting new people, cleaning my car, and keeping my house warm.
  • I'm annoyed by people who wear shorts in the winter, create excessive drama, don't recycle, or talk about how fat they are.
