It'll probably come when you least expect it
Since I’m on this one-year-ago-today kick, I probably should talk about one of the more significant things that happened one year ago today, although I didn’t realize it was significant at the time (isn’t that the way it always goes, though?).
On August 14, 2005 I drove back from a Scottish folk festival in Ontario, with Joy. We’d gone to hear one of our favorite writers, Diana Gabaldon, speak at said festival. It was a really fun trip. When I got home I had a message waiting in my Yahoo personals inbox, from a guy who actually gave me his email address . . . and since I wasn’t paying for the service at the time, this was absolutely essential (you can’t communicate via the personals service if you aren’t paying).
It was a nice, well-written message, nothing creepy or weird. He asked me what I was reading and about books I would recommend, which I can talk about forever.
And that was mainly what I wrote about, when I wrote back the next day.
So that was the beginning. Since then, we’ve exchanged a zillion emails, gone on a ghost tour, drunk endless cups of tea at Barnes & Noble, watched people, discussed natural disasters and predicted the end of the world, and tried a bunch of different restaurants. And talked about a lot of things. He’s also the reason why I have this new job.
And all of this was completely unexpected. I pretty much didn’t believe it was real at first. That he was just humoring me, that he didn’t REALLY want to hang out. But it’s been a year, and he’s still around, and he suggested I could apply for a job where we would work together and see each other every day, so I guess he must be okay with hanging out. (And I SO badly want to insert an LOL here, but I refuse to use that acronym, ever, so I won't. But imagine it).
I’m not a big believer in things happening for a reason. A lot of stuff that other people credit to fate or God or whatever, I think is just kind of random or coincidental. But there are people who’ve shown up in my life at various times who’ve turned out to be really good friends . . . and I like to think that’s more than just random coincidence.
So, thanks God, Mike, Yahoo personals, our company for giving Mike a job in Etown . . . somebody can take the credit for this one.
