And the music was soothing

Like many kids, especially oldest kids, I grew up listening to my parents' music. My dad's Patty Page and Johnny Horton tapes, and my mom's Steve Winwood and Phil Collins cassettes.

And sometimes, when I was at a slumber party with girls who had older siblings, I'd hear something popular, like Debbie Gibson or Def Leppard. We liked to prank call boys and play "Pour Some Sugar on Me." I didn't ever do any calling, but I liked to sit in the background and laugh.

Despite all this, there was a whole bunch of music missing. And that's where Wayne's World comes in.

I believe that movie introduced a whole bunch of snot-nosed junior high kids to Queen, Alice Cooper, and Jimmy Hendrix. There are songs that I know solely because of that movie. That's where I learned Bohemian Rhapsody (which I didn't totally believe was a real song because it was just so different from what I normally heard) Foxy, Ballroom Blitz. I remember kids in my 8th grade classes singing those songs suddenly, and only after that movie came out. . . a boy named Eric Weaver got the nickname "Dream" and it stuck until he moved away, all because of Wayne's World.

I doubt Mike Myers had any intention of educating the next generation. But ask most people my age or a few years younger what associations come with Bohemian Rhapsody, and not only will they sing it, but they'll head-bang along to the fast part . . . like they're sitting in a 1976 AMC pacer.

  • I like books, discussing, thinking, my church, friends, and my family.
  • I'm good at gift-giving, shopping, and writing.
  • I'm bad at meeting new people, cleaning my car, and keeping my house warm.
