Internet Definitions

Since I've been reading blogs and internet news, I've noticed some "new" words and phrases. These aren't used in everyday life (that I've heard), but they seem to show up pretty regularly on the web.

To wit:

internets (n.) plural. An anonymous group of people to whom a blogger might address a post. (I think.)

prolly (adv.) a corruption of probably, as in I'll prolly see you later tonight.

"make the baby Jesus cry." I still haven't figured out where this came from, but I've seen it on multiple blogs. It's sort of funny (the first two or three times you read it) but it bugs me that I don't know where it came from. In context: Don't do drugs, kids. Drugs make the baby Jesus cry. It works best when used dripping with irony.

natch (adv.) a corruption of naturally, as in I get dates with guys I don't like, but the guy I like won't ask me out, natch. (It took me forever to figure this one out. I kept thinking OK, you use it like "of course", but I couldn't figure out where it came from. Then last night it dawned on me. Natch.)

More to come as I find them. Maybe.

And, the funniest thing I read all day: did you know that Ted Kennedy has a dog named Splash? Splash?! Seriously . . . what could be worse? (Ok, there are a few worse names. Drowned, maybe.)

****************************************************

And whoever had a finger on the fast forward button quickly realized the mistake and hit rewind. Because we've gone from 79 to 39 degrees, with snow possible on Friday.

It shames me that I know this, but the "make baby jesus cry" thing is from South Park. The school teacher, Mr. Garrison, says it.... Last time I saw South Park was about seven years ago, however, so maybe since then it's taken on a new internet meaning!

The words are interesting. Prolly really irks me for some reason. It's just so lazy!

"Prolly" has always irked me as well... though I've mostly seen it in IM conversations.

In fact, you could say that I ABSOLUTELY HATE when people use that.

Thanks, Sara. I feel better now. I thought it was probably (prolly?) something like that.

Hmm . . . strong feelings AGAINST prolly. So I guess I won't start using it to be cool.

I also have real problems with "prolly."

By the way, sorry my blog apparently screwed up your computer! It's wiped out now, waiting to be reinstalled, and just why it went wrong will remain a mystery for the ages.

My computer is much better now, Sara. I've gotten rid of most of the spyware . . . it's my own fault for not having virus protection! On the plus side, I now know lots more than I did about malware removal!

Oh yeah! And I think George W. referred to the "internets" during one of the presidential debates and was ridiculed for it. Perhaps that's another source.

About Me

  • I'm thirty & living in Amish Country, PA. I'm a marketing writer for a non-profit.
  • I'm Mennonite, but not in a head-covered, dress-wearing kind of way. More in a hippy-liberal, peace-loving kind of way.
  • I like books, discussing, thinking, my church, friends, and my family.
  • I'm good at gift-giving, shopping, and writing.
  • I'm bad at meeting new people, cleaning my car, and keeping my house warm.
  • I'm annoyed by people who wear shorts in the winter, create excessive drama, don't recycle, or talk about how fat they are.
