Books are Good
One of the reasons I love contemporary fiction is that sometimes a passage of writing just makes me laugh or takes my breath away with the truth of it.
Not that "classics" can't do that . . . and I know I should read more of them. Then I might be able to give an example. But since I read almost exclusively contemporary stuff, that's what I quote.
The things that strike me don't necessarily strike anyone else as particularly funny or truthful, I guess, but since it's my blog . . .
This is from The Big Love, by Sarah Dunn, and if you think that this is at all entertaining or relevant, you should read the whole thing. For me to quote all the funny passages would probably violate some kind of copyright law.
"I wanted a boyfriend who was a Christian but who wasn't uptight about it, who was good-looking and intelligent and had an interesting job and a sense of humor, who said "fuck" when the situation warranted it, who had attempted but been unable to finish St. Augustine's City of God, who could argue politics with my mother and talk business with my father, who liked Indian food and had nice friends and knew how to dress and would like someday to live abroad."
Amen.
